The 4W Framework is a personal development and career-purpose framework I developed as an adaptation of the widely known Ikigai concept. While Ikigai encourages reflection around what you love, what you are good at, what the world needs, and what you can be rewarded for, the 4W Framework simplifies these dimensions into four practical questions:
W = What do you love to do?
W= What can you do well?
W= What can you be paid for?
W= What does the world need?
At the centre of these four questions is PURPOSE. The framework recognizes that a fulfilling life and career are not necessarily created by choosing between passion and practicality. Instead, they emerge from understanding where these dimensions intersect.
1. What Do You Love?
This is the passion dimension.
What activities energise you? What problems do you naturally enjoy solving? What subjects can you spend hours exploring? What would you still be interested in even if nobody asked you to do it?
These questions help you identify the things that genuinely engage you. What you love points toward your PASSION.
Passion answers:
“What makes me come alive?”
2. What Can You Do?
This is the capability dimension.
What are you naturally good at? What skills have you developed? What do people consistently come to you for? What can you learn and perform at a high level?
This is where interests meet competence. What you can do points toward your PROFESSION.
Profession answers:
“What can I become exceptionally good at?”
3. What Can You Be Paid For?
This is the value dimension.
What problems can you solve that people, organisations or society are willing to exchange resources for?
This question forces us to move beyond the idea that a meaningful career must simply be something we enjoy. A sustainable purpose must often create economic value. What you can be paid for points toward your VOCATION.
Vocation answers:
“What value can I create that can sustain me?”
This is particularly important when translating purpose into a career, business, or professional path.
4. What Does the World Need?
This is the impact dimension.
What problems need to be solved? What contribution is missing? Who needs what you have to offer? Where can your abilities make a meaningful difference?
This moves the conversation from self-discovery to contribution. What the world needs points toward your MISSION.
Mission answers:
“What difference am I here to make?”
Purpose becomes more powerful when it extends beyond personal fulfillment to meaningful contribution.
The real power of the 4W Framework lies not only in the four questions themselves, but in what happens when they begin to overlap.
The Centre: PURPOSE
At the centre of the 4W Framework is Purpose. Purpose is the alignment of the four dimensions:
When these four dimensions increasingly converge, you begin to answer a deeper question: “What am I uniquely positioned to contribute?” This is the essence of purpose. Purpose is therefore not simply about finding what makes you happy. It is about finding the intersection between meaning, mastery, value and impact.
This is why the 4W Framework connects naturally with my broader 3D approach: Discover, Develop, Deliver.
Because purpose without development remains an intention.
Ultimately, the 4W Framework challenges you to stop asking only: “What job should I do?”
Start asking: “What contribution am I uniquely positioned to make?”
